Press Release: Gerald Forrest’s GospelChop Series Returns to ‘Give the Drummer Some’ with DVD Release of “Shed Sessionz Vol. 3”

Gerald Forrest’s GospelChop Series Returns to ‘Give the Drummer Some’ with DVD Release of “Shed Sessionz Vol. 3”’s “Shed Sessionz” DVD Series Highlights Talents of Drummers from Around the World

Sacramento, CA – It was in the iconic 1967 song “Cold Sweat” that the late great James Brown notably called out, “Give the drummer some! Give the drummer some!” acknowledging the drumbeat, steadily in the background, as an instrumental force centering our musical universe. Well James Brown would be proud as veteran video producer/director Gerald Forrest, with the creation of, has proceeded to give the drummer some and more via his ambitious DVD releases entitled, “Shed Sessionz.”

A groundbreaking video series, “Shed Sessionz” features top drummers from around the world, along with their energetic drum chop performance techniques, drum lessons, interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. With Forrest’s latest release offering, “Shed Sessionz Vol. 3,” he highlights some of the best drummers across the United States.

Forrest originally came up with the concept for “Shed Sessionz” after developing the website, as a vehicle to pay tribute to the numerous musical contributions of generations of gospel musicians. His original vision was to educate the world about this inspirational art form and its history. The site has offered free gospel music education, lessons and content since 2005.

Based on the reception and success of, Forrest got the notion to produce and direct his first feature drum video, “Shed Sessionz Vol. 1” (SSV1) in 2006. Featuring drumming prodigies, Tony Royster Jr. and Thomas Pridgen, never before had a full video production been devoted just to drummers in such fashion. The music industry embraced the concept. SSV1 became a global sensation, surpassing expectations with record-breaking web traffic and popularity.

Building upon his vision, Forrest began to scour the country for additional talent while continuing to release free gospel music content and lessons online. In 2007, Forrest directed and produced the second edition in the series, “Shed Sessionz Vol. 2” (SSV2). With an all-star cast of world-class musicians from Los Angeles to Israel, SSV2 took off like a rocket, receiving high acclaim and stellar reviews in drum magazines, drum websites, and drumming blogs around the world. Mainstream media started to take note of this distinctive cultural phenomenon and musicians around the world responded by coining the classic phrase, “Thank you GospelChops!”

In 2009, Forrest set out to expand the outreach efforts of GospelChops and appeal to an even broader audience. Shining his light on gospel bass players, he produced and directed an unprecedented bass performance/instruction DVD, “Bass Sessionz Vol. 1.” Once again, the project broke new barriers in the music industry by bringing together the legends of gospel and jazz, garnering appearances by Grammy Award-winning jazz drummer, Peter Erskine along with Grammy nominated jazz pianist, John Beasley. Gospel bass legend, Andrew Gouche, also put his soulful touch on the project.

The newly released “Shed Sessionz Vol. 3” (SSV3) profiles seven powerful drumming masters. The sessions are laced with intensity and passion as drummers Justin Tyson, Matthew Garstka, Tim Newton, Darion Ja’Von, Frank Fluker, Fred Boswell and Eddie Heyward chop it up with performances that once again bring the drum beat front and center.

“Anyone even remotely familiar with the Black church recognizes that music is at the core of our worshipping and celebration. I created to pay homage to this fact. I wanted the world to have access to the beauty and creativity that is often hidden within the confines of the church sanctuary,” expresses Forrest. “‘Shed Sessionz’ followed as an extension of that same thinking. The drumbeat, like gospel music, is at the essence of it all. It is what holds the rhythm, yet the actual drummer is often just taken for granted. ‘Shed Sessionz’ changes that!”

A man on a mission, Forrest created the nonprofit corporation, GospelChops Foundation last year as another extension of his vision. The organization is dedicated to enhancing the lives of at-risk children in underserved communities through music education. The Young Musicians Program, under its umbrella, is an after-school music-learning program in California, which has gained sponsorship from Marines Toys for Tots and the Google Corporation. Proceeds from the video series support the foundation’s efforts.

Press Release: Kellie Wells to participate in the U.S. Open of Track & Field at Madison Square Garden

Kellie Wells to participate the U.S. Open of Track & Field, presented by Harris, at Madison Square Garden kicking off USA Track & Field’s 2012 Visa Championship Series.

Four hurdle superstars to go head-to-head at U.S. Open

NEW YORK – Four possible 2012 Olympic finalists will contest the women’s 50-meter hurdles at the U.S. Open Track & Field event January 28 at Madison Square Garden, in what promises to be one of the most competitive hurdle matchups of the 2012 indoor season.

USA Track & Field on Thursday announced that defending Olympic gold medalist Dawn Harper, two-time defending world indoor champion Lolo Jones, USA Indoor and Outdoor champion Kellie Wells and British national record-holder Tiffany Ofili Porter will go head-to-head in a hurdling showcase.

The showdown adds to previously announced stars Jesse Williams, Christian Cantwell, Adam Nelson, Bernard Lagat, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Asafa Powell, David Oliver and Jenn Suhr at the inaugural edition of the U.S. Open.

The kick-off event of USATF’s Visa Championship Series, the U.S. Open will be the first track meet to be held in the newly renovated Garden and will be the first major professional meet in the United States as the 2012 Olympic year gets under way. It will be broadcast from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, January 29 on ESPN2.

Best of the best
The 2009 USA Outdoor champion, Dawn Harper has made a name for herself by performing at her best when the chips are down. Third at the 2008 Olympic Trials, she won Olympic gold in Beijing. Likewise, she was third at the 2011 USA Outdoor Championships and came through with bronze at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

One of the most recognizable personalities in the sport, Lolo Jones is a two-time world indoor champion in the 60m hurdles and is the American record holder in the event as well. Although she battled injuries throughout 2011, Jones is a two-time Visa Champion as the top performer of the Indoor Visa Championship Series and was the 2010 USA Outdoor champion, the same year she broke Gail Devers’ indoor American record.

The breakout hurdles star of the 2011 season, Kellie Wells shot to prominence by winning the USA Indoor and Outdoor titles and dominating top marks lists. Her winning time of 7.79 seconds at the 2011 USA Indoor Championships was the #1 time in the world for the year, and at the time gave her the nine fastest times in the world. Outdoors she was as dominant domestically and was a medal favorite for the World Outdoor Championships, where she made the final but hit a hurdle and fell. She will look for her first global medals in 2012.

A two-time NCAA indoor champion and three-time champ outdoors while competing at the University of Michigan, Tiffany Ofili Porter won a bronze medal at the 2006 World Junior Championships while competing for the United States. Now representing Great Britain, she is that country’s national record holder outdoors and was fourth at the 2011 World Outdoor Championships.

About Kellie Wells
Currently, ranked #4 in the world, Kellie is excited to be defending her indoor title in the upcoming indoor track and field meets in the US and Europe while training and living in Orlando, FL.

After suffering a heartbreaking injury at the 2008 Olympic Trials, Wells proved she is back as a force to be reckoned with on the U.S. hurdle scene. Wells won her first outdoor national title in a personal best time of 12.50. During the indoor season, Wells dominated the top marks lists. Wells’ winning time of 7.79 at the 2011 USA Indoor Championships was the #1 time in the world for the year, and at the time gave her the nine fastest times in the world. Wells won her heat and quarterfinal, and during the semi-final, she ran a personal best time of 12.58; however, in the process she tore her hamstring and was unable to run in the finals and did not compete during the remainder of the year. In 2007, Wells showed great promise in her first season as a pro. Wells lowered her PR under the 13-second mark and picked up major international wins in Lignano and Bydogszcz. Wells competed for Hampton University where she was a two-time All-American.
