(Washington, D.C.) October 3, 2011 – For the past 100 years, USCRI has helped to shape history by protecting refugees, serving immigrants and upholding freedom. In light of this milestone, the national nonprofit organization will hold its 100th Anniversary Gala on October 19, 2011 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. The evening’s program will include a special performance by musician, record producer and political activist Wyclef Jean, an auction and the posthumous presentation of two Centennial Awards to President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Senator Edward Kennedy for their outstanding contributions on behalf of refugees and immigrants.
“On behalf of the USCRI Board of Directors, I can truly say how honored we are to have touched the lives of countless refugees and immigrants who have come to this country in search of freedom and opportunity,” said Tom Belote, Board Chair. “We are proud to serve during this landmark year which both celebrates and recognizes that the history of USCRI and the people we serve is inextricably linked with the history of America itself -Out of Many One.”
“As a child of immigrant parents and an immigrant myself, I know firsthand the difficulties refugees and immigrants face,” says former refugee and acclaimed recording artist Wyclef Jean. “Organizations like the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants and their supporters serve a crucial role in protecting the lives, rights and most importantly the dignity of refugees and immigrants. I cannot express how proud I am to be a part of this incredible event.”
USCRI’s 100th Anniversary Gala will bring together federal, state, city, and community leaders, Ambassadors, advocates, and Members of Congress in support of America’s values and long tradition of welcoming newcomers to its shores. From paving the pathway to citizenship to protecting unaccompanied immigrant children to advancing the international movement asserting the rights of refugees, USCRI has led the way for a century.
USCRI is a Washington, D.C. area-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing fair and humane public policy, facilitating and providing direct professional services, and promoting the full participation of refugees and immigrants in community life.
